It's so true. Humility, joy in the simple things, our close interpersonal relationships, as a religious person I would add relationship with G-d... Those are the things that carry you through the rough times and make good times even sweeter.

Some great reads in the footnotes, especially Gracian and the Stoics. I have heard Sam Harris talk at length on extreme honesty as you describe it.
I think "Lying" is Harris' best book actually.
